I thought I'd try a post from my phone instead! We recently went for a long weekend break in Yorkshire, we really wanted to go back to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park www.ysp.co.uk which we first visited in 2010 before we had our son. It really is an amazing place! So much to see and beautiful countryside. Some fabulous Henry Moore's and Barbara Hepworth's whose work I particularly love.
We also went to Hepworth Wakefield for more of the same...
http://www.hepworthwakefield.org/
This opened in 2011 so it was our first visit and we all loved it, although Jimmy wanted to touch everything which is not allowed inside the galleries! There was one Caro sculpture that he could climb in so that was a definite hit! And we all loved this quirky junk sculpture hanging from a crane just outside the walkway to the gallery. It was fun to spot all the different items that he was made from! I like the broom head eyebrows! I think we might try and make our own mini version over the holidays as I have lots of little bits and bobs left over from my 3d illustration days..Summer holidays are here! Going to try and make the most of them before Jimmy starts reception in September..
Say hello to the Jumble Sailor! I'm excited to have finally launched my new vintage shop on etsy. Please come on board here.

I have enjoyed collecting these treasures over many years but it's now time for me to send them to new destinations so I can make my cabin a bit more ship shape! I have so many items to list in the upcoming weeks so please stay tuned...

My inspiration for the name came from the song 'Jumble Sailing' by Clearlake which has always struck a chord with me. See them performing it here.

My super patient husband has designed the Jumble Sailor logo and header for me, he looks like a happy chap doesn't he! I think my husband will be happy to see some of my treasures go to new homes!!Moira Millmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12626290677301393921noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6942333228347991371.post-47202061258030649172013-11-09T17:58:00.003+00:002013-11-09T17:58:55.955+00:00Free as a butterfly

This is my contribution to the annual Christmas coaster promotion run by my US agent.
This year's theme is 'Art Speaks Louder Than Words' and is in support of gay rights in Russia.

"There is a lot of controversy regarding the next Olympic Winter Games, due to take place in Sochi, Russia, especially with Russian laws regarding homosexuality.
At Anna Goodson Illustration Agency, we believe that Art Speaks Louder Than Words and
we wanted to make a statement and show the world that our agency and
illustrators don’t support discrimination or violence of any kind,
regardless of religion, race or sexual orientation."

All the artists were asked to create an image as a protest against this discrimination and
I chose to illustrate a butterfly as a symbol to show that in love, everyone is equal.
You can see the rest of the artists images here
This illustration has just been published in US Magazine Thriving Family. The article dealt with jealousy between stepparents and children and I wanted to show the woman's speech bubble as a green-eyed monster as she jealously looks at her partner and his daughter who is the 'apple of his eye'.Moira Millmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12626290677301393921noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6942333228347991371.post-16306246526834344452013-07-14T23:06:00.000+01:002013-07-14T23:07:15.081+01:00Illustration Friday - Travel

Here are my latest illustrations for Woman & Home just out in the July edition, it's time to pick your peas and tend to your roses...I've been trying to get back on track with my garden a bit this year but can't say I've been organised enough to plant any peas or anything else edible for that matter. I haven't submitted anything for I.F in ages, but as a glasses wearer myself I was inspired by this weeks topic. I enjoyed playing around with type on this quote by Dorothy Parker which makes me smile. Howdy! Here's my entry for Mail Me Art 3. This little cowboy character came from a doodle in my sketchbook, it was nice to create something 'real' as although all my drawing is done by hand with pencil and paper, it only really exists as 'art' once it's scanned into the computer and coloured.
This years submissions had to be drawn directly onto an envelope as no digitally produced work was allowed and my entry is partly inspired by my rediscovery of my rubber stamping materials, it was fun to get inky fingers again! I took part in a previous Mail Me Art project 3 years ago, which you can see here
Here he is setting off on his journey, it will be interesting to see if he arrives unscathed although he is not travelling too far at all, just up the road really to Leicestershire! I hope Royal Mail will handle him with care!
Royal Mail aren't very popular at the moment with the price rises and size restrictions coming into effect next month which will affect independent sellers on etsy and folksy. Please take a look at Flora's blog post which makes very interesting reading and please do sign the e petition...Moira Millmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12626290677301393921noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6942333228347991371.post-75566913742610646162013-03-14T21:10:00.000+00:002013-03-14T21:13:33.333+00:00Stamp it out!

I recently rediscovered my old tins of carved rubber stamps that I made over 10 years ago ( yikes that long!) It was nice to find them again and I had forgotten just how many I had made! They were great fun to do and it was always quite a challenge to come up with a design that would work in such a small space: 3cm x 4.5cm. I even made myself a special tool for the job, basically a needle in a wooden handle so I could get all the fine details in.
Here's a selection of some of my favourites all with a
slightly surreal feel.
I spent ages searching for the perfect rubber to
carve and I've still got a little stash of them waiting to be cut. I used to sell little groups of framed prints at my exhibitions and the prints do make nice cards too, perhaps I should find the time to make some new ones for my shop...Moira Millmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12626290677301393921noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6942333228347991371.post-83841117720889984312013-03-13T11:36:00.000+00:002013-03-13T11:36:28.604+00:00Bloomin' Spring!

I took a few photos around the house this week to join in with Lou's Nature in the Home feature on her blog. We have had some lovely Spring sunshine this week but it's still so cold!
These are my Mother's Day flowers, and a very good choice too, thanks Jimmy! Gerberas are my favourite flowers and I love the zingy colours which fit in very well with our colour scheme. I'm fond of chrysanthemums too which always remind me of my dear Grandma who always had dried ones in her house when I was little.
I was excited to see that one of my many cacti also decided to flower on Mother's Day. I have loved cacti and succulents since I was a teenager, I find them strangely beautiful and a bit creepy, especially when they flower.
In honour of World Book Day I thought I'd post a few pics of some books I recently added to my groaning bookshelves. Last year on an art college reunion visit back to Maidstone, we also visited the lovely town of Rochester and stumbled upon a great old bookshop. It was full to the rafters with books and I made a beeline for the children's section and couldn't resist these. I was really pleased to find 'Jimmy wins a prize' with beautiful illustrations from 1946. The Owl and the Pussy-Cat dates from 1969 how cool is that psychedelic cat!Moira Millmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12626290677301393921noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6942333228347991371.post-16258331574913946482013-03-05T12:43:00.001+00:002013-03-05T12:51:34.395+00:00Hello Spring!

On the subject of competitions, todryfor are holding their annual tea towel design competition this month, and you can find all the information you need to enter HERE. I was super chuffed to win it last year and it's been great to see my design for sale in shops up and down the country, including Debenhams!

Happy New Year everyone:)
Here's a little spot illustration just published in Woman & Home. It's that time of year when we all join the queue at the customer service desk to return our unwanted Christmas gifts! Mad eh? Well I must say if I had received that jumper I would have kept it! Hope you were all happy with your Christmas presents.. I had lots of lovely things and we now have an even bigger toy mountain in the living room!Moira Millmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12626290677301393921noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6942333228347991371.post-5609834228768818272012-12-21T22:13:00.002+00:002012-12-21T22:31:36.744+00:00Warm Wishes!

Here's a couple of snaps of our Christmas tree. It's a little one, high up on the sideboard out of Jimmy's reach but he is really captivated by it for the first time this year. I absolutely love these fuzzy pipe cleaner santas, some of them came from my Grandma and Grandad and I remember being really fascinated by them when I was little. I was really pleased to find a box of them in a charity shop a few years ago so now we have a complete set. So simple, yet so charming!Moira Millmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12626290677301393921noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6942333228347991371.post-57785160498549136462012-11-12T22:02:00.001+00:002012-11-12T22:09:40.400+00:00Women's Wit Calendar

I just received some copies of this little calendar that I worked on last year, it's small and very cute, designed with a magnetic back so you can stick it on the fridge. I remember it well as it was the last job I worked on whilst heavily pregnant, I was so big I could hardly reach my desk!

I illustrated the outer box and some little icons to go inside. It's always nice to see the finished result, it's just a shame that the art director credited me as last years illustrator Jean Tuttle! Hey ho, these things happen!
My Personaliteas design has now made it onto a mug! It's available to buy wholesale from Beast in Show, and I'm selling some in my etsy and folksy shops.
It's adapted slightly from the tea towel, and the design wraps around the mug with a little surprise character in the bottom:
Here's a recent illustration that I did for Baltimore magazine, about the latest publishing phenomenon that is 'Fifty Shades of Grey'. The art director wanted to show mums out for coffee sneakily reading the bestselling book which has been deemed 'mommy porn' in the USA. Here are my latest spot illustrations just published in Woman and Home. This one is about decluttering your wardrobe and funnily enough I've just sent a large bag of old clothes to the charity shop. I'm a terrible hoarder so it's always good to have a clear out and do some good as well.
This one is about hanging pictures and the tip is to use strips of velcro. We have a family photo wall in our house too but I can't say I thought about using that.. I guess you wouldn't be left with holes all over the place although it might be a bit tricky to get off!Moira Millmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12626290677301393921noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6942333228347991371.post-89438546212858471122012-04-22T16:35:00.002+01:002012-04-22T19:59:00.709+01:00Illustration Friday - Heights

The Beanstalk was huge. Luckily Louisa had a head for heights!
Just a quick one for this week's IF topic, my first in ages. It's my niece's 8th Birthday today... Happy Birthday Louisa! She's having a 'climbing' party with her sister Daisy and a few friends, so have fun girls and take care on those beanstalks!Moira Millmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12626290677301393921noreply@blogger.com5
